Mac OS X daily builds thanks to new sponsor

Tiled daily builds have been available since a while for Windows, Ubuntu, Fedora and several other GNU/Linux distributions. Now there are daily builds available for Mac OS X as well!

These builds have been made possible by Steffen Itterheim from Kobold Kit, who sent me his Mac mini with a fresh install of Mac OS X 10.8. In addition he also offered to host the builds on his server. A huge thanks to Steffen for this amazing contribution!

Having access to a Mac of course has some other advantages as well. New releases will now always be available for OS X immediately, while before it would usually take a few days. Also, I should now be able to reproduce (and hopefully fix) issues that only happen on OS X.

If you're a Mac OS X user who enjoys making maps with Tiled, be sure to check out Steffen's Kobold Touch and Kobold Kit game engines. They integrate very well with Tiled and add new features based on custom properties like parallax scrolling and physics, and should be a quick way to get a headstart on your game.

    1. You can't publish games in Tiled. It is only a generic editor for tile-based levels. How to publish a game depends on the platform you wish to publish it on.

    1. Tiled is a generic map editor that does not target any specific game engine. However, you can check out the 3rd party solutions for Unity 3D at https://github.com/bjorn/tiled/wiki/Support-for-TMX-maps#unity-3d

  4. Hi there, I just downloaded your editor for Mac and received Genieo malware along with it (Source forge automatically included it with my download) it was trying to hijack all my browsers.
    you might consider hosting your downloads on a different site - this is definitely bad for business...

    1. I'd be really surprised if indeed SourceForge would include Genieo along with Tiled. More likely, you have clicked the wrong download button. You're not the only one, since it's pretty tricky to realize that this huge "Download" button is an advertisement, and not the button with which to download Tiled:

      So, while it's definitely not as bad actually shipping Genieo along with Tiled, this kind of advertisements getting shown when downloading Tiled is still completely unacceptable. Hence I will consider moving the downloads somewhere else.

  6. Hi there. With this product you are adding a wonderful contribution to the world and to the happiness of peoples lives. In turn, I hope you enjoy much prosperity and joy. My question is this: I need to build tilemaps with hexagon shaped tiles. Can this be done with Tiled? If not, what product do you recommend? Thanks!

    1. Thanks for the kind words! Unfortunately, Tiled Qt does not support hexagonal map creation yet. See issue https://github.com/bjorn/tiled/issues/1 for this. There you can also find links to forks that have added it which you can try to compile yourself.

      The old Java version of Tiled did support hexagonal maps experimentally and may be worth trying (but well, it's old and somewhat crappy). You can get it at http://sourceforge.net/projects/tiled/files/Tiled/0.7.2/. If that's not what you're looking for you might also try Mappy (http://www.tilemap.co.uk/mappy.php), but it's also old and it's Windows-only.

    2. Thank you for the reply. I am wondering if you have a timeline for when hex map support might make it into a non-experimental state. I'd really love to make use of the TMX methods built into KoboldKit and not have to build my own engine to handle hex maps. I look forward to your response! Thanks!

    3. I'm sorry but since this is a hobby project of mine there is no way I can commit to a timeline for specific features, especially when I personally have no need for them. I'd love to support hexagonal maps properly but I can't say when I would get around to this unless you're willing to pay for it.

      Additionally, note that hexagonal map support in Tiled has little to do with hexagonal map support in Kobold Kit. The support for such maps would have to be added to Kobold Kit as well.

  7. How hard would it be to port this to Android? I use AIDE to code so having a Tiled for Android would make life a lot simpler.

    1. Well, there is a Qt version for Android so most of the code will be compatible. However, the UI is largely unsuitable for a phone or tablet and should basically be rewritten from scratch for it to work in a nice way. Depending on the features you're looking for, the effort would be 1-3 months of full time development I think.
